Basic Photoshop Cs2 Tools

Writen by Ashley Peach

Ok well let's start with the basic tools, first if you haven't got a tools box then go Window then tick tools. In the box that will appear on the left of your screen will be all the tools you will need to make anything you won't. At the top of the box is a feather, clicking this takes you to the Photoshop website incase you have any major problems, Under that we have 2 icons first icon is a rectangle box (m), with this box you can do things like highlight certain parts of what your making and move them about. Second is the Arrow icon (v), this is used for moving things that you have pasted onto the screen, and also moving text once you have added text. Then under these two icons we have the Lasso tool (l), the lasso tool is used for feathering an image pasted onto the screen or careful drawing round an image.

Next icon is the Magic Wand Tool (w). This is used for highlighting round an image E.g. a warrior in the middle of your banner click on the Magic Wand tool and then click next to the picture, this will highlight all parts of what you pasted that has no part of the image then press delete this leave you with just the picture (Better used with a render). Next tool is the Crop Tool (c). This too allows you to crop thing such as an image used in the same way as a screen shot you've taken and posted in Microsoft Word. Next is the slice tool (k) the slice tool allows you to take what your doing part by part. Next is the spot healing tool (j), this tool allows you to mend a part of a broken picture. E.g. you accidentally removed part of a picture or color background select this tool and click on the part that is wrong and it will fix it. Brush tool (b) the brush tool is used for making good backgrounds and also on new layers they have different types so that you get a different effect with every brush you use.

Clone Stamp Tool (s), this is used for taking a certain part of what's on the screen (what ever you click with this tool) and will clone what you click. History Brush Tool (y), this tool is used in the same way as undoing something on Microsoft E.g. you drew a bane out of place go over that line with this tool and it'll undo it bit by bit ( does the opposite to the brush tool).Eraser tool (e), Used for rubbing out anything on the background. Gradient Tool (g) this allows you to click and drag a line on the banner. Select a color gradient at the top and click and dragon on the banner as this goes along the color will match the gradient type that you choose at the top. Blur Tool(r) this blurs what ever you blur with this tool. Right click the tool and you can also get the smudge and sharpen tool. Dodge Tool (o) This tool is used to change the background effect and any other layer, Right clicking this gives you a dodge, sponger and burn option. Path Selection Tool (a) Allows you select another path to what you're looking for. Text Tool, This allows you to add text to your project, you can change the text style by clicking Style at the top once Text has been tool has been selected.

Pen Tool (p), allows you to make lines that change color and shapes on the project. Rectangle Tool (u), This is like the other rectangle tool but when click and dragging rectangle size it fills with the color selected at the top. Notes Tool (n), Allows you to attach notes to your project. Eyedropper tool (I) This tool allows you to select a certain color by clicking on the color that you won't on the Project. Hand Tool (h), when zoomed in this tool allows you to move around the project E.g. if you need to move to one side and you're in the middle using this tool lets you move the project over. Zoom Tool (z) this zooms in on anything your making, to zoom back out keep clicking the zoom tool. Color boxes, Foreground and Background the top color is Foreground this is anything you do say getting a brush what ever color is in this section will be brushed on, Background when starting a new project what ever is in this section will be the background color. Bottom picture in the tool bar will switch what you're doing to Image Ready instead of Photoshop, and vise verse.

We hope that this tutorial will help all the new people using Photoshop,

Cleaning Your Computer With Hijackthis

Writen by Adam Knife

Warning: HijackThis is an advanced tool. To use it effectively you may need to understand concepts such as the Windows registry, and be willing to make changes to system critical files. Use at your own risk.

HijackThis is a program that will produce a textual output of all the applications and settings set up on your computer which could be involved in malware attacks, such as spyware or BHOs. It's frequently used by tech support staff to help diagnose software problems, and by technical computer users to solve their own problems.

Once you have downloaded and produced a HijackThis log (the easy part), you must learn how to read it. Each section in the log is designated by an identfier, a two or three letter/number combonation at the beginning of the line, which tells you what the line means.

The "R" sections (R0, R1, R2, and R3) specify Internet Explorer specific settings. Since Internet Explorer is a frequent target for Browser Hijacker Objects, this is frequently one of the most important sections. Lines beginning with R0 are related to Internet Explorer Search settings, R1 is for the "search functions," R2 is not used, and R3 is the URL search hook for when an entry is typed in the address bar with no protocol designator.

As you move in to the "F" sections, you may see some entries you don't understand. The majority of the "F" sections are for .ini settings, which are no longer frequently used by regular software, but can still be used by spyware to attempt to hide it's start up time, or leverage an extra "early" control.

N1-4 are the same as the "R" sections, except with reference to Netscape-compatible browsers, such as the popular Mozilla Firefox.

O1 corresponds to your HOSTS file, while the HOSTS file is a very complex and in-depth topic that could warrant an entire article of it's own, each entry in here makes domain names act as "aliases" for IPs: this can be used to hijack popular websites, such as Google or anti-virus update domains.

O2 (and O3, to an extent) are your BHOs, "Browser Helper Objects," frequently mislabeled as Browser Hijacker Objects, since that is what they are commonly used for. Googling these BHOs can help you identify what they are.

O4 covers everything in the Windows Registry's start up section. Anything in this section is run at boot time.

O5-9 are security related settings such as administrative lock down.

O10 are "Winsock Hijackers," again, a very in-depth topic that could be covered by volumes of articles, however, overall, these are "bad," and should be looked in to.

The remainder of the "O" sections are fairly rare, as they correspond to high level settings which are not established on most systems, and rarely used by malware. You can look these sections up in the HijackThis manual.

Adam X. Knife runs a process library for users to look up processes running on their computers, and provides a powerful HijackThis Log Analyzer to help users understand their HJT logs.

Microsoft Crm And Great Plains Implementation Freight Forwarding Business Automation Example

Writen by Andrew Karasev

Microsoft Business Solutions offers several ERP applications: Great Plains, Navision, Solomon and its own CRM solution – Microsoft CRM. Targeting to automate all business operations, Microsoft CRM is now integrated with Microsoft Great Plains and in the close future it should have integration with Microsoft Navision. In this small article we'll show you business automation example, where Microsoft CRM and Great Plains are integrated and customized to fit Freight Forwarding business processes.

• CRM. Central Customer and Vendor records place. Assuming you have agents across the USA and internationally – CRM, being web-interface application and so, could be used across the globe with good internet connection. The nice features of this product are central emailing – you send email from MS CRM and receive responses from your clients back in CRM, where they are permanently stored and documented. You can issue Quote and Sales Order directly in CRM if needed or could have them issues in Microsoft Great Plains with propagation to Microsoft CRM (deploying MS CRM-Great Plains integration tool – BizTalk based connector).

• Accounting/ERP. Microsoft Great Plains could play this role, being integrated with Microsoft CRM and with industry-specific business system. In the case of Freight Forwarding/Transportation – this business system could calculate fees and charged, associated with MBL/HBL and posted against agent accounts. You could deploy SQL triggers for instant integration or stored procs for scheduled batches.

• Great Plains Customizations. Freight Forwarding specifics require Shipment tracking with SOP and POP invoices posted and tracked against the shipment and probably regular/monthly Agent Settlement report, where you match customer and vendor invoices, associated with the agent shipments and create AR or AP document, depending on positive or negative balance. This is Great Plains Dexterity customization or web-development (if you need your agents lookup features from remote locations)

• Microsoft CRM Customization. Assuming that you have Shipment Tracking system, which might be SQL or Oracle based – you need shipment lookups for your order takers and customer support personnel from Microsoft CRM screens. Being designed for easy web customization – Microsoft CRM allows you to incorporate .Net web application into its screens, such as Account, Contact, Lead, Opportunity, etc. You use Web Forms and Microsoft CRM SDK to penetrate into MS CRM security realm and then ADO.Net to call third party MS SQL Server or Oracle data

• Implementation Advices. Microsoft CRM should be probably tried as in-house pilot implementation with 5 users license and then you can purchase additional license as you have your users trained. If you need MS CRM SDK C# or VB.Net programming – you could subcontract. Great Plains requires consultant help to be implemented and integrated, because it has sophisticated tables structure and documents flow mechanism.

• Data Conversion. We recommend you to deploy Great Plains Integration manager to import Vendor and Customers plus open documents. Historical transactions, if needed – should be moved by outside consultant. Microsoft CRM has import tool – try it first and subcontract more complex – attachments, for example.

Good luck with implementation and customization and if you have issues or concerns – we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

Canadian Business Accounting Software

Writen by Elizabeth Morgan

What do businesses have in common? Well, the main thing is the goal of each company to generate income through legitimate transactions.

On the other hand, what is not common among businesses? There are a variety of things. It could be the way management runs the company. It could also be the kind of products or services offered. And it could also be the different laws that govern these businesses.

Yes, there are laws that govern business. If you look closely at each country, you will see that they have different laws and ordinances that govern how businesses are run. For example, imagine Product A, which is legally sold in Country A. However, the same product in Country B cannot be sold legally.

If you go to Canada and start looking deeper into its business situation, you will realize that there are unique conditions that can be found there and nowhere else. To assist Canadian businesses in their accounting and auditing work, computer techies, along with number and business experts, have come up with business accounting software that is meant for companies that operate in Canada. If necessary, this kind of software takes into consideration Canadian business laws for computing purposes.

Canadian business accounting software is the best companion business people can have. Once installed in the company's computer system, all a person has to do is type in or encode the necessary information that needs to be processed. Afterwards, the software does all the necessary computations. There is no need to do manual computations that can take up large chunks of precious time. With Canadian business accounting software, computing is now an easier task.

If you are interested in purchasing Canadian business accounting software, try searching through the Internet. There are various companies online that offer this Canadian-specific software.

Futures Trading Software

Writen by Jennifer Bailey

Futures trading software plays an important role in the economics of speculation. Speculation brings about a gradual adjustment of prices to the contingencies foreseen by the speculator. If a speculator foresees that the market situation after six months will warrant a rise in prices, he begins to make purchases with the objective of selling the commodity at a profit. The price begins to rise gradually, as more and more of the commodity is purchased by the speculators.

It follows from the above that speculation steadies the trend of prices and restricts the movement of prices within a narrow range. The peaks and valleys of price fluctuations are made considerably smoother by the activities of speculators who buy in anticipation of a rise in prices and sell in expectation of a decline therein. Speculators usually take these decisions with the help of futures trading software.

Speculation welds various markets together by keeping prices between different markets at a normal parity. This is achieved through specialized speculative operations called arbitrage operations. When the price of a commodity or a security in one market is higher than that prevailing in another market, the speculators, with the help of futures trading software, will at once take the opportunity to make a profit. They will naturally make their purchases in the market at a lower price, to sell it at a profit in a market where the same thing fetches a higher price. In this way, speculation acts as an equalizer, or leveler of prices between various markets.

In spite of the well-recognized benefits of speculation outlined above, such activity comes under fire quite frequently. The main theme of attack against speculation generally is that it is an evil practice, like gambling. In theory, it is assumed that the speculators speculate only if they possess the necessary skill, foresight, intelligence and finance to do so. In practice, however, all sorts of people speculate on exchanges. Many of them proceed recklessly and without adequate finances, with the result that they come to grief and may lose more than they can afford.

Microsoft Great Plains Inventory Control Overview For Consultant

Writen by Andrew Karasev

Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains is marketed for mid-size companies as well as Navision (which has very good positions in Europe and emerging markets where it can be easily localized). Great Plains Inventory control is pretty robust and here we would like to give you highlights on standard functionality as well as what could be added to its standard features.

Historically Great Plains Dynamics / eEnterprise was designed with modules structure with very clear ERP workflow – Inventory control had a link to General Ledger and was interacting with Sales Order Processing, Invoicing, later on with Purchase Order Processing (it was some development and unsuccessful marriage with Intellisol Purchase Order Processing third party module), Project Accounting and Manufacturing set. Inventory control has addition in the form of Bill of Materials module (we see the whole spectrum of downsizing manufacturing companies, who are switching from full-featured manufacturing to Great Plains Inventory control with Bill of Materials). Features:

• Inventory Allocation – from SOP Sales Order, Invoice you can automatically of manually allocate Inventory items

• Sales Item, Service, Misc Charge, Flat Fee, etc – these are types of the Inventory items.

• Serial and Lot Number tracking – serial number is unique, while Lot Number might be assigned to the lot of items

• LIFO, FIFO, Average with Periodic or Perpetual – these terms should be familiar to accountant

• Inventory Class – you can group items into the class and have reporting in ReportWriter or just Crystal Reports to summarize by inventory class

• Kit – item might be a set of items – or a kit

• Substitute items – you can have two (GP version 7.5 and 8.0)

• ABC Codes – is you are familiar with replenishment or manufacturing

• Accounts distribution – Great Plains first look if you specify accounts on the item level, then if these are empty – it look at the class level and then to Setup->Posting->Posting Accounts

• Inventory Count – this nice feature was added several years ago with version 5.0

Add-Ons:

• Barcoding – you have to check with your Microsoft Great Plains Partner which third party solution fits to your needs.

• Manufacturing – Great Plains Software bought Icontrol Manufacturing and integrated it into Great Plains about 8 years ago and now it is seamlessly integrated with Inventory Control module

• Web front – there are eConnect (SDK for eCommerce developer), eOrder, and other eXXX series products that you could deploy. There is a good chance that you will have to develop custom web-interface to your Great Plains back end

Good luck with implementation, customization and integration and if you have issues or concerns – we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

How To Crop Your Wrongsized Pdf Pages

Writen by Ugur Akinci

Disasters happen.

Imagine you have finished a 900-page PDF document and you realize that the left margin should've been 0.5 inches smaller. Oops!

No cause for fear and trembling though. It's actually very easy to take care of this vexing problem if you own a copy of the Acrobat Professional, or the "writer" version of the Acrobat as opposed to the freely downloadable "reader" version.

Open your mis-formatted PDF document in Acrobat Professional and follow these steps:

1) Select Document > Crop Pages from the main menu to display the Crop Pages dialog box.

2) Select the LEFT margin and enter 0.5 by making sure that the Unit is in inches.

3) Select ALL for the Page Range.

4) Click OK, and you are done.

You can also select to change only a certain range of pages by entering the page Numbers in the From and To fields.

You can further specify if you want those changes only in ODD or EVEN numbered pages (within the specified range) by selecting the appropriate option from the APPLY TO drop-down list.

You can always cancel your margin changes by clicking the Set to Zero button.

And by selecting the Constrain Proportions check-box you can adjust all 4 margins simultaneously, by the same amount.

Microsoft Great Plains Sql Reporting And Data Fixing

Writen by Andrew Karasev

This is beginner level SQL scripting article for DB Administrator, Programmer, IT Specialist

Our and Microsoft Business Solutions goal here is to educate database administrator, programmer, software developer to enable them support Microsoft Great Plains for their companies. In our opinion self support is the goal of Microsoft to facilitate implementation of its products: Great Plains, Navision, Solomon, Microsoft CRM. You can do it for your company, being aware on simple data repair techniques and appealing to Microsoft Business Solutions Techknowledge database. This will allow you to avoid expensive consultants visits onsite. You only need the help from professional when you plan on complex customization, interface or integration, then you can appeal to somebody who specializes in these tasks and can do inexpensive nation-wide remote support for you.

Let's look at simple data repair techniques.

1. How to delete the user:

If user, shuts down computer, before signing off Great Plains - she/he will get the message that she/he is already signed. Then you need to delete the user from the activity table. Run the query below against DYNAMICS database - it will unlock the user:

delete ACTIVITY where USERID='MARIE'

2. How to unlock the batch:

From our experience - this is second FAQ we are hearing from Great Plains administrator. Run this script against company database to unlock hanging batch:

update SY00500 set BCHSTTUS=0 where BACHNUMB = 'BATCH0023'

Sometimes you also have to run this script against DYNAMICS database (if first script doesn't do the job)

delete SY00800 where BACHNUMB = 'BATCH0023'

3. Some Reporting Queries – Before we go there, we would like you to be able to find the table with the data you are looking for. Launch Great Plains and go to Tools->Resource Description->Tables. Find the table in the proper series. If you are looking for the customers – it should be RM00101 – customer master file.

Now lets query Customer Master table:

select CUSTNMBR, CUSTNAME from RM00101 where STATE='CA'

This query will return Customer Number, Customer Name for all the customers in California

Next query will give you top 10 Inventory Items with the best Sales Results

select a.ITEMNMBR, a.ITEMDESC, b.SALESNUMBER from IV00101 a join (select top 10 ITEMNMBR, count(ITEMNMBR) as SALESNUMBER from SOP30300 where SOPTYPE=3 group by ITEMNMBR order by count(ITEMNMBR) desc) b on a.ITEMNMBR=b.ITEMNMBR

Happy querying and supporting! if you want us to do the help you - give us a call 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

Surviving The Changes In Microsoft Word 2003 Mail Merge

Writen by Chris Le Roy

With every new version of Microsoft Office it seems that in Microsoft's wisdom they decide to change the way in which we do the humble mail merge. In earlier versions of Microsoft Word such as Microsoft Word 2000, the process for undertaking a mail merge was simple. The first step was to create your data source, which by default was a Microsoft Word document with a simple table in it. The next step was to create the main document, which could be a letter or pamphlet. Then the third step was to add your fields to the main document and then finally carry out the merge.

In Microsoft Word 2003, if you are starting a brand new mail merge then you should be aware that you no longer produce a Microsoft Word document as a datasource, in fact the datasource you produce is a Microsoft Access database. I, to a certain degree applaud this move because I am a fervent believer that all raw data should in fact be stored in a database of some sort, it doesn't matter whether its a Microsoft Access Database, a MySQL Database or SQL Server. The reason for this, is that the database enables the user to use this information more than once and a database is far more stable than a Microsoft Word document, especially if you are working with large volumes of data. You will also find that the Microsoft Access database created by the Mail Merge Wizard is very simple and will only contain a single table with the fields you defined.

The cool thing Microsoft has done with this, is that by storing your raw data in a Microsoft Access database, it enables you in the future to easily share this data with other applications. In fact, it is much easier to move data into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or even into a commercial database system like Microsoft SQL Server from Microsoft Access. The new mail merge functionality also enables you to filter and sort your data much easily. The other key benefit is that the Filter allows you to select what data you want to actually include in the mail merge proces.

The issue I have though with the new Microsoft Word 2003 Mail Merge process is the complexity of doing a merge. In particular the long winded way that you have to add the merge fields to your document. In earlier versions of the Microsoft Word application, such as Microsoft Word 2000, you could simply add each merge field to your main document in one go. In Microsoft Word 2003, you must first open the Merge Fields dialogue box each time you want to add a field. That's right, you have to add each field by selecting the field and then inserting the merge field and then close the dialogue and then you must repeat this step for each individual field. I find this more annoying than anything else.

We could of course manually enter each field in using the shortcut Ctrl + F9 (used to insert a field) but that too I consider is a lot of work. I think in future versions this is something that Microsoft will change but I guess only time will tell.

All in all, I think the new Microsoft Word 2003 Mail Merge Wizard is a positive step forward but for the previous users of the mail merge process it can be a little daunting and confusing.

If you would like some help or step-by-step assistance, my team at One-on-One Personal Computer Training have put together a Microsoft Office Specialist Word 2003 Training kit to help you step through the process of doing a mail merge in Microsoft Word 2003 and its available by clicking here. We also provide a daily Microsoft Office hints and tips email which is 100% free that you can subscribe to by visiting http://www.1-on-1.biz

The Capability Maturity Model And The Sei What Has It Done For Software Development So Far

Writen by Paul Bellchambers

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) was formed to provide the US government with a body that developed standards for the human and technology aspects of the processes of software and systems development. It is a research and development centre. It now has a European office in Frankfurt. So what does this mean to me you are probably asking yourself? Possibly not very much but for a few minutes of your time you may find that there is something the SEI can offer you by way of a different perspective on software and the process of developing software.

The purpose of the SEI (www.sei.cmu.edu) is to enable organisations to make measurable improvements in the way they deliver code, defect free, on time and within budget. This is the Holy Grail that all users of software would like to see. They don't want to be guinea pigs with every package or application they have to work with. The SEI has worked hard on establishing a model that enable organisations and people to understand where they are and where they would like to be in the future – with a transition path to get there. The organisation has expanded its services and expertise beyond the model initially developed, the Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The book, Managing the Software Process by Watts Humphries, covers the CMM and how to improve the process..

The adoption of the model is most likely more appropriate in the larger corporate organizations when implemented in a more formal manner in the more technical industries such as Telco, Aerospace and Defence. The computer industry that supplies hardware, software and services to these sectors saw an opportunity to provide development tools with services including knowledge transfer of the CMM and how it would/could work in an organisation. It was and potentially still is a big ticket item! This may not seem to be relevant to smaller organisation but I would argue that it does. Even the principles, if not the practice, are relevant to the production of software.

So - what does it do for the developer?

Firstly, I think that it helps to instill a mindset that has the quality of the code at the centre. Around that there are a number of core elements such as management, process, improvement, repeatability and communications. In reality this stuff applies to any human business activity but we are either too lazy or lack the knowledge to do it.

Secondly, it makes you think about the impact of whether you are doing or not doing something and communicating that to your peers in a team. This is a key issue because as we have seen in many stark situations, imperial gallons have been measured as litres, millimeters as centimeters, or scales on engineering drawings measured in metric but implemented as imperial and so on. These types of mistakes have lead to not enough fuel being pumped into a passenger aircraft, resulting in a serious incident. Some lead to costly errors and others can result in death. You may think that this is an extreme example and not relevant but I would take issue, because there are two things that matter here. Firstly, there is the capability and knowledge to do the job correctly and secondly the communication, recording and checking the work that has been done. If the management process supports these then the risk are reduced, which in turn means the impact of a mistake is also lessened dramatically.

Thirdly, it could be used as the basis for an apprenticeship, like the apprentice model of years ago. This way of passing on knowledge to the younger generation went out of fashion, but it seems to be making a comeback now. The role of the apprentice was to learn from the experienced hand who had been doing the job for years. Supported by training, especially updated training on new methods of doing things, the apprentice would become experienced through a two or more year process. This typically applied to trades such as plumbing, electricity etc. I believe that this could be a vehicle to transfer knowledge from the older generation of developers to the younger generation. Aside from the courses in university (which is a separate issue) not much on the management and process side is appropriately taught in computer science degrees. They are too technology orientated, unless you know different ;-)).

Fourthly, it provides a framework in which the developer can work to deliver code that is free from bugs and on time and on budget. The measurements are goal orientated and not focused on time and money. The normal measurement is a financial measurement which means the mindset is focused on delivery and not on the quality and robustness of the code. The framework need not be heavy duty – lightweight and flexible may in the end turn out to be best for most projects because that is the nature of the beast. But where governance and accountability is important a more heavier duty framework will go the distance a you will need to have documented all of the activity, people, spend etc for and inquiry on the state of the project and the software that has been produced. If it is software that has a direct bearing on life or death then the ability to show how the code was derived, how it is structured, how it is put together with other code, what the processes were for defining requirements, audit trail from code to initial idea, how the developers worked, what standards they use etc. is critical. Perhaps more applications should have a "black box" for code, a component inside the software that can take readings from points in the application as it running. I know that there are a few products like this but if more users required this to be part of the application we may see software quality issues reduce.

So what should you be doing? I suggest a review of your current development practices and what you think needs to be done. Look at the SEI website and see what nuggets of information that you could use in your team or organization (no matter how small it may be). Check out http://www.sei.cmu.edu/ .

Firewall Software

Writen by Rob Pirozzi

Beginning in the Zhou Dynasty, which was in the 11th century BC, construction was begun on what was to become the Great Wall of China. For 2,700 years, culminating in the mid-1600s, construction continued on the wall until it stretched 4,163 miles from east to west China. The wall was constructed to prevent invasion by other states of China and outer tribes. An interesting fact is that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object that can be seen from space.

When you connect your PC to the Internet either through cable, dial-up, or DSL, it is like China prior to the Great Wall. Anyone can invade your PC, and plunder, pillage, and destroy content on your PC. A firewall acts just like the Great Wall of China. When installed, it acts as a barrier between your PC and the outside world. It prevents unwanted and unauthorized access to your PC over your Internet connection.

Firewalls come in two basic forms:

  • Hardware firewalls - hardware firewalls are a piece of hardware, like a PC, that gets installed between your PC and your Internet connection. Literally, a cable from your cable or DSL modem gets connected to the hardware firewall. Another cable is connected from the hardware firewall to your PC. When done, the hardware firewall acts as a barrier between your PC and the Internet. It lets you get out to the Internet, but it does not allow unauthorized access from the Internet to your PC. Many cable, DSL, and wireless routers/switches have firewalls built into them.
  • Software firewalls - A software firewall serves the same purpose as a hardware firewall. It, however, is software that gets installed directly onto your PC. The software monitors all inbound and outbound Internet traffic, and creates a software barrier between the Internet port into your PC and everything else on your PC. Once installed, it lets you get out to the Internet, but it does not allow unauthorized access from the Internet to your PC. Software firewalls have an advantage in that they can implement rigid controls over what software installed on your PC will be allowed to access the Internet.

Many people use both a hardware firewall and a software firewall. It is similar to having a fence to protect access to your yard, and then a front door to protect access to your house. Everyone should use at least one firewall, hardware or software. If you have a laptop, you should use a software firewall. That way the firewall goes with you, wherever you go, protecting your PC.

The 9 Pitfalls Of The Public Sector Enterprise Level Computer Systems

Writen by Chris Freund

The following is an all too often scenario when trying to implement the enterprise system:

The decision is made at the executive level to build a new computer/software system. A project manager/coordinator is assigned and holds meetings with a newly created RFP committee, stakeholders and users to best determine how this system needs to look, and documents it to tremendous detail. The committee publishes the RFP and invites prospective vendors to submit bids.

After a fairly short period of time, vendors respond, and based on these bids, a short list of potential vendors is created and they are invited to demonstrate their products/prototypes, using both vendor resources as well as the public sector resources. The RFP committee, after another short period of time, makes a final selection and then the contract is negotiated.

The project kickoff occurs; the vendor spends several months or even years developing the system, and a team at the public sector agency helps verify that the system is delivered according to the specifications contained in the RFP. Certain pieces of the system may get rolled out to test users at this point too. During this process, holes in the original RFP are found, or perhaps legislation occurs that must be accounted for. Change orders are submitted, timelines get stretched, and the system costs at least twice as much as the bid.

Finally, the go live date occurs. There is much fanfare, training is done, and users start using the system. The complaints start. Certain influential users seem to sabotage the system. Other users and stakeholders may point out that the system, though delivered as documented, just isn't going to work. When working with the vendor, the change orders will continue to break the budget, and now that the system is in production, these changes cost even more. The downward spiral has begun and there's no saving the project.

Ironically, this is the case in most enterprise level systems. By using best practices, all involved in the project have properly covered themselves, and many have traveled this road before. They approach the entire project assuming it will eventually fail, but make sure they are not the reason for that failure. Proper documentation is in place and no one individual can be targeted as the point of failure.

Why is this so difficult? After all, within individual departments on small projects, there has been much success even with bumps in the road. Issues seem to get addressed and the projects don't get off track much.

There is no simple key cause as to why enterprise projects like this fail. But they can succeed. And it depends on several key factors, each of which must be addressed. One weak link can destroy the project.

1. The right executive has to oversee the project

This doesn't mean the executive has to manage the project. Many times responsibility for a project may fall on a single department, yet other parallel departments are part of the project. This is a recipe for failure. The executive must be high enough in the hierarchy to be in charge of ALL departments involved, and must oversee and provide "air cover" for the project. As an example, let's assume a new juvenile justice case management system is to be implemented. Within the juvenile justice agency are several departments. Let's assume (in a very simplistic way) that there is an IT department, a department that oversees private providers, a department that oversees the public agencies, and a department that oversees administration and regulations. Often times, the IT department will naturally be given the authority and responsibility to implement the new system. WRONG! In this case, the Juvenile Justice Agency head (or even higher level) must be actively involved and ultimately oversee the project. Only this executive can resolve issues that may occur between the other departments. This executive must be absolutely committed to the project, and that means this executive must be involved in all stages of the project, from RFP to vendor selection to final rollout.

2. The right project manager and methodology have to be selected

A project manager who is a stickler for detail and follows rules including all project management best practices may sound like the right fit. However, this is not the case, especially in more complex implementations.

The project manager needs to be experienced not only technically, but also politically. This is a special person that performs multiple roles: Documentation, budgeting, cheerleading, diplomacy, as well as many other hats. This person is absolutely full time during the project and becomes the key person who can be contacted about anything regarding the project. This person works directly for the key executive and they have a relationship that is strong enough to carry through some of the project lows.

This person must be able to deal with adversity and also be able to take responsibility during bumps in the road. This person must have the right attitude. If a problem occurs, this person must be more concerned with the solution than deflecting blame or covering themselves. Because this person has the right relationship with the key executive, they will not have to worry that every decision made during the project is perfect, only that if a decision isn't right, they have the ability to perform corrective action.

This person also needs to be able to manage a project using an iterative process. As described above, no matter how carefully thought through and documented new requirements will come up that weren't thought of, or legislative/rules changes may occur during the project. This should carefully be brought up so that those involved in the project won't worry that every possible detail is locked in stone until the product is delivered. If project participants believe there will be no accommodations for change, then they will try to design something so complex as to handle every possible anticipated scenario, and the system will end up cumbersome and difficult to use.

3. Change Management must start before the RFP is even published

Enterprise projects mean change. For most people, this is stressful. After all, they are used to their processes, know the glitches and work-arounds in their existing systems, and think the pain of a new system just isn't worth it for them. Often times, the new system will replace a "perfectly good" system they are using, and in many cases, people will actually lose some of their power due to more availability of information that they used to have in their control. Naturally they are resistant to change.

Of course change management strategies must be used especially in enterprise level projects. But they need to be started right at the earliest stages of a project because small problems at the very beginning with key people can destroy enthusiasm and goodwill of key players.

A good way to keep all abreast is an active internal website where content regarding the project is continually updated. It might be good to consider a web log and accept user feedback. A very new trend in the high tech world is the CEO/executives of companies actually running a blog and accepting all types of feedback, both good and bad. Sometimes it's the fact someone is being heard that's more important than an action being taken.

As stated in the project management section, early on in the project it is important to allow for some (but not excessive) changes to some of the low level detail design as the project progresses.

Corporate Accounting Microsoft Dynamics Gp 90 Future Horizons Notes For Consultant

Writen by Andrew Karasev

As we are writing this article – a lot of new ERP related information about Microsoft Business Solutions products: Axapta (Microsoft Dynamics AX), Navision (Microsoft Dynamics NAV), Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft Great Plains is published on the daily basis, especially with the advance of the so-called "Project Green". We would like to be a bit pessimistic and toss in new ideas about future Microsoft MRP products development and marketing positioning as we see the development on European (including UK, East Europe: Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, plus Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece), Latin American (including Brazil, where Microsoft is starting from scratch) and Asian ERP markets.

• Microsoft Dynamics GP vs. Microsoft Dynamics AX. This is probably the question of future positioning of these two ERPs. Axapta has modern design (the end of 20th century), while Great Plains Software Dynamics was designed in the beginning of 1990th as Great Plains Dexterity application

• Microsoft Dynamics GP USA MRP market. This seems to be the stronghold of Microsoft Great Plains. Microsoft Business Solutions makes its Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 the first wave of its Project Green with the switch from Microsoft Dexterity to .Net and Visual Studio development: C# and VB, plus the increased role of eConnect (initially introduced for eCommerce web XML developers, now the middle tier to resolve Great Plains Dexterity peculiarity with generic .Net development)

• Microsoft Dynamics GP European ERP Market. In Europe Microsoft Great Plains is leaving its French, German, Spanish and Dutch positions (leaving current Microsoft Great Plains clients to switch to Navision or Axapta). Microsoft Dynamics GP will stay in UK, Australia, New Zealand, LATAM: Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, Salvador, Panama, Caribbean

• Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Microsoft CRM 3.0 will become the CRM frontend for all the Microsoft Dynamics ERPs, including Great Plains, Axapta, Navision, Solomon. The most interesting part is Microsoft CRM integration, when you can automatically move Customers, Quotes, Orders from Microsoft CRM to accounting back end – here you have two options: use Microsoft Great Plains CRM integration (based on BizTalk for CRM 1.2 or eConnect based integration for MS CRM 3.0 and GP 9.0)

• Oracle/Java/EJB/J2EE. Here we have to appeal to our third party programming expertise and knowledge/experience with Oracle Financials/Oracle E-Business Suite/Oracle Applications development and Programming

• SAP MRPs. SAP is another traditional MRP market leader. For years ago SAP purchased Israel made MRP software application, now known as SAP Business One. SAP Business One is seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Office (what is the next step from SAP R/3 mySAP project Mendocino with Microsoft for the next few years), plus SBO is integrated on the Sales and Purchasing transaction consolidation level wit mySAP/SAP/R3. In the case of SAP – you will need customization/integration partner to help you with the above consolidation

• International aspects. Well – as you can conclude from this whitepaper and our past publications – Microsoft Great Plains / Dynamics GP is not supported for non English or Spanish speaking countries. In the case of Brazil/Sao Paulo/Rio de Janeiro/Salvador – population speaks in Brazilian Portuguese. SAP Business One could be a good spoke/hub ERP application to be consolidated to Microsoft Dynamics GP/NAV or AX in the USA/UK/France (including Canada/Montreal/Quebec)/Germany/Europe

Expense Report Software

Writen by Richard Romando

Expense report software is the software that enables management to know where the money is being spent, thereby controlling and auditing its expenses to meet the ideal budget estimates. This software is an automated organizer that provides an excellent expense-management solution. Owing to the automated expense reporting, this software reduces errors in reporting and increases expense control, resulting in cost savings. It enables the payroll department to streamline the process of integrating expense report data with the payroll of the employees in an organized and standard fashion. Indeed, there is variety of expense report software. Depending on the requirements, a company has to choose the ideal software package, and it has to implement it only after sufficient trials. A large number of companies all over the world have been implementing expense report software for easy and quick expense reporting and reimbursement.

Concur Service Ltd. offers web-based expense report software so that employees can submit their expense reports anytime and from anywhere. This software accompanies electronic receipts eliminating hard copies of invoices, vouchers and bills. As a consequence, approval and reimbursement process will be quickened. There are control tools along with this software that minimize frauds and encourage compliance with the rules and regulations of government regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley act. Furthermore, there is another software program by the name of Expense Management Automation (EMA) software that automates the filing, approval and reimbursement processes of expense reports of employees. According to Aberdeen Group, an employee can save the 60 percent of the time required for the submission of an expense report and save the time required for the settlement of claim by 90 percent through this software. Even the companies can reduce the costs involved in the processing of expense reports by 80 percent.

All of this web-based expense report software began in 1999. Before that, companies used to follow some Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages for expense reporting and management. One of the top-most companies called Thomson Corporation implemented this software and began to see the benefits of it. The Ccompany has saved $16 for every expense management transaction. However, in order to implement the expense report software, employees should be computer savvy and at the same time they should follow all the instructions involved in the application of the software.

Expense Reports provides detailed information about expense reports, expense report forms, expense report software, travel expense reports and more. Expense Reports is the sister site of Bookkeeping Jobs.

Oracle Ebusiness Suite Is It Really Possible To Support It Remotely

Writen by Andrew Karasev

Well, let's begin from philosophical introduction. It is probably moving into this direction, all the recent talks about offshore development, remote support, customization project outsourcing, BPO (business processes outsourcing). And the final result will be so-called radical compromise, meaning it is not a regular compromise, but rather something we do not know about. In order to predict the future form of Oracle Applications/Fusion support we have to look at the trends.

• Market Trends. When we see that traditional manufacturing is now outsourced to China, India, Brazil, Latin America, Mexico, South East Asia – we should question if traditional ERP support will stay in the local framework and model, when consultants go onsite, sit the day with corporate IT, CEO, Controller and key AR/AP people to design the MRP model. In fact – communication channel advances allow you to be present in the conference virtually and do not feel strong disadvantages of not being able to shake opponent hands. If you are in USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand – do you really care if get phone/skype/websession support, not peer-to-peer?

• Step-by-Step. Well, we have to be conservative in order to be profitable and mutually beneficial. Let's start from small - assume that remote support and outsourcing are for Oracle E-Business Suite Extensions & Customizations, Oracle Report Builder design & development, plus typical customer support cases, when you as a client are OK to call 800 number

• International Challenge. This is when Oracle Applications has to be supported in their localized (multicurrency, local and regional taxation and language: Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Russian). This is definitely the obstacle, however we see more examples when company has employees from Argentina, Brazil, Haiti, Montreal, China sitting in the same office…

• Conclusion. Probably the most likely scenario will be the one when you will have to accept the conception of virtual reality.

Zonelabs Zone Alarm Pro

Writen by Ben Sikes

A firewall is essential on any Internet connected PC. Firewalls control what is allowed in and out of the computer, virtually eliminating the possibility of a hacker gaining control or of spyware that has found it's way in transmitting any data.

ZoneLabs Zone Alarm Pro is a popular personal firewall application – a piece of software installed onto the PC to block unwanted connections by using:

• the Triple Defense Firewall™

• an anti-spyware system

• the SmartDefense™ service

• protection of privacy and identity

• email protection

• wireless PC security

Zone Alarm Pro is available in a variety of packages, from the single user license to large volume license packages, making it ideal for the home, small network or larger working environment. The program is clearly laid out and easy to use. If a query can't be fixed through support documentation, there are online user forms for quick and handy advice.

The Triple Defense Firewall, as the name suggests, has three layers of protection, providing excellent security against Internet pests:

• defense against hackers, spyware, and Trojans by not allowing them through

• prevention of "bad" programs attacking "good" programs on the PC by surrounding each application with a second firewall

• deep down protection of the operating system against malicious attacks

SmartDefense works with the firewalls, automatically updating itself with information on new spyware programs and adjusting Zone Alarm's security settings to match. SmartDefense examines everything that tries to connect to the Internet from the PC to see if it is performing a valid operation. If it is not, access is blocked. If it does allow the connection, SmartDefense will continue to monitor the activity to ensure it does not perform any operations outside of it's built-in policies.

The privacy and identity protection works to stop annoying pop-up ads and to prevent personal information leaving the computer without permission. Email is kept secure with any suspicious attachments being quarantined for examination in case they contain anything harmful. Likewise, any suspicious outbound messages are also stopped to prevent unintentionally passing on anything nasty.

Even with all of the protection offered by the firewall, some persistent spyware will still find it's way into the computer. The anti-spyware system within Zone Alarm Pro roots it out, while learning to recognize legitimate items with spyware-like tendencies, such as the cookies for your favorite websites.

Wireless protection is crucial when out in the open on a laptop as well as on the home network. It's easy for a hacker to hijack a wireless connection or even set up their own. Zone Alarm can prevent connection hijacking wherever the connection is made.

Zone Alarm Pro runs on Windows systems only, with minimum specifications of:

• Windows 98SE/ME, 48MB RAM (some functions may be limited and support is due to end for the operating systems late 2006)

• Windows 2000 Pro, 64MB RAM

• Windows XP, 128MB RAM

• Pentium III 450 MHz or higher

• 50MB available hard disk space

• Internet access is required for updates (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, AOL and MSN compatible)

• POP3 and SMTP mail only

• Instant Messenger compatibility with minimum version number: MSN 6.2.0205, Windows Messenger 4.7.0.2009, Yahoo! IM 5.5.1226, AIM 5.2.3292, ICQ Pro 2003b, ICQ Lite 5.0, Trillian 0.74i, Trillian Pro 1.0, GAIM 0.74, Miranda 0.3.2

Getting Technical Support Help Online

Writen by Cavyl Stewart

Sometimes your PC will start acting strange for no apparent reason or a program which you use regularly will all of a sudden stop working as it should. This can be a frustrating experience especially if you have no idea where to go for help. If this happens to you, don't panic! Here are some simple tips which may turn your frown upside down.

1. Don't assume that your problem is unique. The chances are that someone else has had that problem and it has already been solved. Google is a great place for getting technical support help believe it or not. You may have to experiment with wording your problem and refining your search, but it's worth a try. For example my Outlook email client stopped showing me the 'Subject' field when I was composing new email. As a result all of my email was going out without a subject. After a bit of experimenting with wording the problem I found the answer by searching on the phrase "Outlook subject field missing". Someone in an online discussion group had the same problem and the answer was provided. When you find good discussions groups bookmark them for future use. I have a bookmark I call Technical Support Help and it's full of great web sites.

2. The Google trick is good for lots of software but you should always try the web site of the program's manufacturer as well. Sometimes your problem is really a bug and there may be a new release or work around available. Many software web sites have FAQs, discussion lists, and help desks available that provide free support. Sometimes there is a telephone number that you can call but you may have to pay for live help.

3. There are companies that offer free general help for simple questions and then charge a sliding scale for more complicated ones. Support Freaks (www.supportfreaks.com) is a good one to try. Even if you have to pay, the rates are reasonable. Click on the "Freebies" link, under the "Quick Links" menu to see if your question is eligible for free help.

4. There are probably any number of local PC support groups that meet in libraries and other locations near your home. Some of these groups are very specific in nature and some are general. Try searching Google for "PC Support Group" or "PC User group" and the name of your town. Also check with your local librarian and computer stores. They often know of these groups.

5. Speaking of computer stores, you can often pick the brains of the more knowledgeable salespeople if you are lucky enough to find any. Many times these employees love computers so much that they will act as your big brother or sister if you need some quick help. Sometimes they moonlight as consultants at a good rate.

This ought to be enough information to get you started on the road to solving your next PC or software problem. If you are having Internet connectivity problems then your ISP is the first place to start. If you can't get online at all, and you don't think you know their phone number, think again. I'll bet that it's printed on every bill that they send you. You'll also need your account number and you can bet that it's printed on the bill as well.

Remember -- When it comes to getting technical support help, the first rule is: Don't Panic!

Time Clock Software Choosing The Best

Writen by David Jacobsen

If you run a business and your time clock software is getting out of date, or perhaps you want to buy software for the first time, then you have plenty of options to choose from. You can buy time clock software from many software companies, computer software stores, and web sites. It's a good idea to spend some time looking around and finding out where you can get the best deals for what your company needs. But the first step is to determine which software will be right for your company's needs.

Firstly, you need to choose software that can handle your current number of employees, and allow some room for future expansion. If you expect your company to grow, there's no point having a program that will run out of capacity almost as soon as you add the first extra employee. Always think ahead, so that you minimize the number of times you'll need to upgrade your software program.

Secondly, look for software that can perform multiple functions. Yes, time clock software is designed to track the hours your employees work, and that's fine. But it's great if it can also link straight into your payroll system, particularly when it comes to tax time. You need to be able to add or delete employees quickly and easily. Talk to the salespeople who are familiar with different types of time clock software, so that you can get a better idea of which one will do all the tasks you need it to do.

The final step, once you've purchased the new software, is to make sure you train your current payroll employees to use it properly. So make sure they know exactly how to clock in and out, to minimize the chance of mistakes being made. You also need to train the staff that will be implementing the software in payroll to use it correctly, and also how to use all the more advanced functions as well.

If possible, choose a software package that provides support during the implementation phase at least, and preferably for longer. If the software company doesn't offer any sort of training or support, you may be better off buying another package. Having time clock software that works smoothly and efficiently will do a lot to keep your employees and the payroll department happy. Accuracy saves time and money, so the sooner you can get the new software running smoothly, the better it will be for everyone.

The Email Alternative Using An Extranet For Online Document Sharing

Writen by Rick Mosenkis

Why is an extranet better than email for sharing documents? The answer is simple: email is perfect for one-to-one communication, but not ideally suited for groups engaged in project collaboration.

Most e-mail programs provide little – if any – effective way to prioritize your messages and attachments. Everything arrives in the same place, in the order in which it was sent.

With an extranet, all project related documents are automatically captured within a folder dedicated to a project.

Not mixed in with the latest joke circulating around the office.

In addition, an extranet can handle any size document. With e-mail, you run the risk of large attachments not passing through the company firewall.

Sharing a power point presentation with a group is a perfect example. With email, you have to break the presentations into small parts, with each section attached to a separate email. The sections don't arrive at the same time, and it can be quite confusing for everyone involved. Imagine sharing three presentations, each in 3 parts, to six people. That would be nine emails to six people. Fifty-four messages!

Using an extranet, the presentations can be sent at the same time, all intact, automatically filed into a single project folder along with all the other related materials.

And everyone has access at the same time.

Many extranets make it even easier, using automatic email alerts that inform the recipients that the presentations are available, and providing a comment function that allows each user to share their point-of-view.

An extranet assures that important documents get to the right place, ready for instant response. And it puts related documents and messages together. The budget, schedule, strategic plan, power point presentation, everyone's notes and comments -- they all appear on the same page. No sorting through a long list of unrelated emails.

One final point. Many extranets are secured with 128 bit encryption, the same protection used for protecting financial transactions. Email, on the other hand, can land in anybody's hands, which is OK if you're sending the latest joke, but not at all funny when it comes to the confidentiality of your most important documents.

Rick Mosenkis is the President and CEO of Trichys, the creators of WorkZone hosted intranet and extranet software. With customers around the world, among large and small companies, Trichys develops easy-to-use web-based software that allows non-technical business professionals to leverage the power of the Internet without IT support.

The World Of Software

Writen by Sandro Azzopardi

'…is the programs and procedure required to enable a computer to perform a specific task…'. The software industry is huge and an ever changing one. Software has been with us since the first computers. Without it, computers cannot operate. Various kinds of software exist in the market today. They can be classified into:

Operating Systems
The lowest level form of software which has direct contact with the computer hardware. It manages resources as well as other software programs sitting on top. The operating system takes care of all the low level functions a computer performs and is probably the most complex piece of software in circulation.

Applications Software
Software which can normally be bought from stores is called application software. These packages serve infinite purposes and can vary from office applications, like word processors, spreadsheets, payroll systems, account systems, anti-virus applications and database driven software, to games, communication and multimedia applications.

Tailor-Made Software
Same as application software, tailor made software is written specifically to perform a particular task and to meet the user's specific requirements. This software fills the gap that application suites leave in the software industry. Certain performances needed by particular businesses and organizations cannot be performed by the standard application suite found on stores' shelves. As a result, several software companies specialize in this area and create software applications designed to perform a specific task for specific sectors in our society.

The Process
Software is normally written by professional programmers working with small to medium companies as well as large corporations. They create standard packages that are then marketed and distributed worldwide. The purpose can vary from general use, like operating systems and office applications to specific use, like software written for hospitals and government departments. The process of writing tailor-made software can be totally different though. Before the programmers put their hands on the keyboard and start coding, a whole process is carried out by systems analyst, normally called feasibility study. This study serves to understand the business requirements of the specific organization to which the software is going to be written. A full documented systems design is then written explaining all these requirements, which will also server as the basis on which programmers write their code in order to produce the end product.

The Works
Software applications need to be loaded through a disk or through a network link from an office server or internet. It loads into the computer memory and normally gets installed on the local computer's internal drive. Once resident there, every time the package is called from the user, it loads into the computer's memory and execution starts. Some applications remain resident in the computer's memory for as long as the computer is functioning. These are normally functions forming part of the operating system and other applications like network applications, anti-virus software and device drivers.

Everything one sees on a computer screen is made up of software. Without it, a computer cannot operate and is useless. Software applications have gone a long way and today many software applications can perform millions of tasks every second, supported by the evolution of computer hardware and the huge leaps forward of technology.

Microsoft Dynamics Crm 30 Preliminary Highlights

Microsoft is currently on the way to release Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0. Current version is MS CRM 1.2. Why Microsoft Business Solutions skipped one version (2.0 or the like)? One of the Microsoft answers was – version 1.2 had too many new features (as developers we may guess – MS CRM SDK redesign – some functionality was deprecated – joke – of course MS CRM 1.2 is very impressive progress comparing to the pioneer – 1.0), so 1.2 was playing the role of skipped 2.0. This article is targeted to IT departments who do self-implementation and self-customization and we'll try to give you the info on new release, which is expected in December, 2005.

• Migration Tool. There will be migration path from MS CRM 1.2 to 3.0. According to Microsoft it should be relatively straightforward upgrade

• Pre-Callouts. N MS CRM 1.2 as you probably know – you can use post call-outs to place your custom logic. In 3.0 you can deploy he possibility to call your custom code before the commitment and so if needed roll-back the change

• Duplicates merge. Well – you probably noticed the fact that in 1.2 you can't clean up duplicate records with one or another automation tool. In 3.0 – duplicates merge is finally realized and you can merge activities and decide which phone number, or address to pick for the consolidated record.

• Marketing Module. Now you should be able to do marketing campaigns and place criteria to pick the targeted audience.

• Scheduling. You will see more features, available in MS Outlook to facilitate your work. Now you should be able to schedule "field service" type of appointments with your customers

• MS Outlook-like interface. Microsoft Outlook users worldwide count is probably something astonishing and it is logical marketing idea to capitalize on this. If you make your products to use intuitive (or trained in your alma mater university) Microsoft Office Outlook interface – clients may expect their users to speed up with the learning curve

• Installation, Administration, Support. These should be a way more simple. It is hard to believe, because MS CRM uses MS Exchange, Active Directory, etc. – but this is what it is.

• Technical Highlights. One of the most astonishing should be the possibility to integrate one-to-many custom table relationship, including MS Outlook client synchronization. Imagine – you have cargo tracking system and you use MS CRM order as shipment object. Then you can have multiple shipment one-to-many relationships, such as shipment statuses, shipment items, etc.

• MS CRM Suite. With 3.0 you do not have to purchase MS CRM Sales or Professional to get, say service module. Now you have the option to add modules in the future. However if you purchase MS CRM Professional before December 2005 – you will get full set of MS Dynamics CRM 3.0 modules

Digital Signage Gets Closer To The Point Of Purchase

Writen by Bob R

With today's technological advancement, businesses, advertisers, and marketers alike are all looking for new, attention grabbing, cost effective ways to advertise their products and catch the eye of potential customers. Digital Signs provide this unique attention grabbing form of advertising. These ads can be displayed on any digital screens including plasma televisions, electronic billboards, projection screens, or other new forms of digital presentation such as the Organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens that are cheaper than the liquid crystal display (LCD) screens. These screens can be controlled remotely with authorization with just a computer and an Internet connection. The content that can be displayed on these screen ranges from text to full motion video with or without audio enhancement. In this new form of Digital Signage Advertising it is very important that you advertisement will capture the idea of the product and interest the buyer, without giving them too much information at one time. Advertisers want their Digital Signage advertisements to be clear and crisp and any professional Digital Signage advertising company can help advertisers and business create custom digital signage advertisements, which will captivate members of the target market for the companies product or service.

This new form of technology is gathering much support and stirring up quite a bit of interest, as Richard Branson, CEO of the Virgin brand announced his companies plan to introduce touch screen advertising boards in many popular locations in the world such as New York's Time Square as well as in other locations such as London, Paris, Beijing, Loss Angeles, New Delhi, and hundreds of other locations. The first of these touch screens is to be introduced in New York City. These screens utilize digital signage advertisements as users can touch a product advertisement with their finger and instantly get more information about the brand and product including where the product is available for purchase.

Currently, the dropping prices of LCD Televisions as well s Plasma Screen Televisions have led many top companies as well as small businesses to create digital signage advertisements in major, high population density regions such as Times Square in New York City, as well as less traveled locations such as retail outlets, doctor's offices, fast food restaurants, gas stations, and others.

This new type of advertising is an attempt by companies to improve their Point of Purchase Advertising techniques so these types of advertisements are especially prevalent in stores where the product being advertised is being sold. When advertisers advertise using digital signage, many try to get some video content in their ads so that they catch the eye of the customers; however, they do not want to overcrowd their advertisement with information and visuals, as this will discourage customers from learning more about the product. Also, although the option of audio content on the ads is available, advertisers sometimes opt not to use audio content as the locations of these ads are usually in bustling loud locations and the advertisements are often inaudible. The bottom line is that digital signage advertising is growing rapidly and maybe one of the primary ways of advertising in the coming months.

Erp Software Packages

Writen by Jennifer Bailey

Enterprise resource planning systems integrate all the departments and functions across a company onto a single computer system that can serve all those departments? particular needs. Two types of ERP software packages are Open Source ERP software and Commercial ERP software.

Compiere and GNU Enterprise are Open Source ERP software. Compiere is suited for small and medium sized ERP enterprises, especially in the business and service sector. It is designed to follow changes as a business evolves. Customers and even production personnel can modify the information structure at any given point of time. Compiere provides multiple views of business information based on the detail of the actual transactions. This structure allows maximum flexibility and easy integration of supplemental external information.

Microsoft Dynamics from Microsoft Business Division is a business solutions software. Microsoft Dynamics AX is one of Microsoft?s flagship enterprise resource planning systems. Its primary strengths are ease of use and customization, internationalization and leading edge technology. Microsoft Dynamics NAV is an ERP computer program that Microsoft Corporation supplies. It is intended to assist with finance, manufacturing, customer relationship management, supply chains, analytics, and electronic commerce in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

Another commercial ERP software is mySAP ERP. It is produced by SAP AG and was formerly known as SAP R/3. This is a client/server-based application that uses a 3-tier model. A presentation or client layer, which interfaces with the user. A second layer which houses all the business-specific logic is the application layer, and the third layer is the database layer which records and stores all the information about the system, including transactional and configuration data.

The success of any ERP package depends on its ease of customization and the implementation process.

Theres Gold In Your Websites Server Log

Writen by Stephen Bucaro

Many Webmasters have never bothered to view their website's server log. Ignoring your server log is like flying with a blind pilot. You may still be cruising along, but you have no idea where you are or where you're headed. If your website is on a free host, you probably don't have access to the server log. However, if you pay for your web host, or if you own the server, you almost always have some access to the server log.

In this article, you'll learn what kind of information a typical server log provides, how to analyze that information, and how to use that information to steer your website in a direction for growth and success.

The actual data in the server log is just that, data. Data is of little use without an application to compile, categorize, analyze, and turn it into useful information. The power of server log analysis software varies depending upon the web host, and it's not related to how much you pay for hosting service. I have seen some very low budget web hosts with powerful server log analysis software, and some expensive web hosts that provide only a limited utility.

The importance of the server log analysis software is second only to up-time reliabilty when it comes to web hosts. A web server log can tell you who is visiting your web site, where they're coming from, what operating system and web browser they're using, what pages of your website they are viewing, and much more. A smart webmaster performs a regular monthly analysis of the valuable information contained in the server log.

Hits

Some webmasters brag about the number of "hits" their website receives, but hits themselves are not important. For example, when a search engine spiders your website, it generates a hit for every page it visits. There are ways to generate millions of hits on a website without anyone ever actually viewing a single page.

The important statistics are "page view hits" and "unique visitors". Server log analysis software should tell you how many times each page was viewed. Anaylyzing the popularity of individual pages tells you where to place your most important advertisements, and what kind of new content you should add to your website.

The king of all statistics is the number of unique visitors your web site receives. When it comes to selling advertising or joining the most exclusive affiliate programs, a high number of unique visitors each month is the statistic that gets respect.

Good analysis software will tell you how many pages each visitor viewed and how long they stayed on your website. The goal is to develop content that gets your visitors to stay longer, a quality sometimes referred to as "stickiness".

A statistic related to hits is "bandwidth". This is a complicated statistic because you want more visitors and that causes bandwidth to go up. On the other hand, high bandwidth consumption makes your website repond slower (and most web hosts charge extra for bandwidth beyond a certain limit). What you want is to design your web pages so they use bandwidth efficiently, and you want to be on the lookout for people who are stealing your bandwidth (usually by linking to images on your web site).

Referrers

Good server log analysis software will provide you with the URLs of the webpages that people clicked on to get to your website. This is extremely valuable information. If you are receiving a high volume of traffic from another website, you can almost consider that website to be your business partner. It would be to your advantage to find ways to make your website more useful to the referring website. For example, learn what the topic of the referring website is and place more related content on your website.

One common method of aiding referrers is to place a reciprocal link on your website. However, don't bother placing the reciprocal link on a "links" page with hundreds of other links (a link farm). If you can't provide an honest reciprocal link, it's better to do nothing. An honest reciprocal link might be a page containing a review of the referrer's website, and that page should contain only a few other links.

Search Strings

Good server log analysis software will provide you with the keywords and search strings people entered at a search site to find your website. One way to get more traffic to your website is to provide more content related to the top keywords. If getting more traffic is your single goal, there are websites that will provide you with a list of the current most popular keywords entered into search engines. Then you can provide more content related to those keywords. This gets involved with the subject of "Search Engine Optimization" (SEO).

SEO is a science in itself, covered in other articles, but I will reveal a secret trick as an example of SEO tactics. Starting with a top keyword, generate every possible misspelling of that keyword and place those at the top of your webpage with the text color the same as the webpage background. (Note: I don't use that trick or any other SEO tricks myself because if you get caught the search engines will penalize your website.)

Platform and User Agent Good server log analysis software will tell you which operating systems and which browser brands and versions people are using to access your website. At the time of this writing, the most common operating system is Windows XP and the most common browser is Internet Explorer version 6. However, you will find a wide range of operating systems and browsers accessing you website. Unfortunately, they are not all compatible.

The fact is, you can't design your website to be 100 percent compatible with every operating system and web browser in use today. That would require either using only plain html (version 3) or using browser detection code and creating a dozen variations of each webpage. Use your server log's platform and user agent data to decide which browser your web pages should to be designed to be compatible with. Your statistics will probably show that 90 percent of your website's visitors are using the latest or the previous version of Internet Explorer.

Country Information

Good server log analysis software will tell you which countries your website visitors are located in. Analysis of the bucarotechelp.com server logs shows that visitors are located in every country, village, and hamlet on the planet. This leads to the question, should you create multiple variations of each webpage to accomodate visitors from other nations? It depends upon your business and your resources. The fact is that the language of business and commerce across the planet is English, and I receive frequent email, in English, from all over the planet.

Important Ways to Use Server Log Information

Website Design

Remember when the typical website had a gray background and a single image in the middle of the page? Today, that would be below the standard for a kids website on AOL. Does your server log "platform" and "user agent" statistics tell you that most of the visitors to your website are using Windows XP with Internet Explorer Version 6, while your website is designed for Windows 95 and Internet Explorer Version 4? Can you afford to be presenting a website that looks outdated?

I think it's a mistake to design a website that requires your visitors to have the latest bleeding-edge technology. On the other hand, if the rest of the web is using ASP (Active Server Pages) to generate custom webpages on-the-fly that use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to create webpages that resemble slick magazine pages and DHTML (Dynamic HTML) to provide interactivity, it might be time for you to investigate those technologies.

If your website is a business site or E-commerce site, the visual style and technical level of your website reflects the quality of your business or service. To determine the proper visual style and technology level of your website requires you to monitor three things.

1. Your competitors. You want to look as in-style as they do, but avoid following them down the road to bloated plugins (Macromedia Flash). 2. The portion of your audience using broad band Internet Access. Less than half of U.S. Make sure your webpages load within 20 seconds over a 56kbps modem connection. 2. Your server log platform and user agent statistics. Your web pages need to be designed to be compatible with the current most popular operating system and web browser version.

Webhost Performance

Web hosts provide two basic kinds of service, shared hosting and dedicated hosting. If your website is on a shared host, there may be hundreds of other websites sharing the same computer as your website. This limits the performance of your website. Many web host providers use "bandwidth throttling" to prevent one website from hogging all the available bandwidth.

As your website grows and attracts increasing traffic, it will need more of the host computers processor time and more bandwidth. Monitor your server log hits, and bandwidth statistics. At some point, your website may hit a performance wall and you may need to move to a higher grade of hosting, or a different web host company to continue growth.

When moving to a different web host company, don't trust the specifications they provide. Check several different web host directories that let visitors rate web hosts. If several different web host directories have many users that give a web host company a high rating, that's the company you want to trust with your website.

Website Topic

As you analyze certain website server statistics (for example, "page view hits", and "top search engine keywords") and make adjustments, you may find the content of your website drifting away from your original intent. At some point, you may have to decide, Am I going to chase traffic and change the topic of my website, or am I more interested in focusing on the topic of my choice?

If the original objective of your website was to make money above all else, then let your visitors steer your website's content. There's nothing wrong with that. Everybody's got to make a living. But, if the original objective of your website was to be a resource on a subject that you are passionate about, then you may need to reassess the content of your website.

I would reccommend having the best of both worlds. Stick to content related to the subject of your website, but delineate a wide enough scope of the topic so that when your server statistics point out an opportunity to increase traffic, you have rules to guide you.

In this article you learned some of the types of information you can mine from your web server log and some powerful ways to use that information to steer your website in a direction for growth and success. If you are one of those webmasters who has never bothered to view their website's server log, you now know that you have been overlooking some gold nuggets.
